Calon-naboen med nyt hjerte
Château Capbern ligger på grusede højdedrag med kalkstensbase tæt på Gironde. Slottet er nabo til Calon Ségur, og siden Terroirs de Suravenir overtog begge ejendomme i 2012, har Capbern nydt godt af samme tekniske hold i mark og kælder. Fra og med 2024-årgangen bærer etiketten Calons hjertemotiv, en tydelig markering af den historiske og praktiske forbindelse mellem de to slotte.

2025 er 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot og 2% Cabernet Franc. Det placerer Capbern i en klar Cabernet-drevet Saint-Estèphe-form, men med Merlot nok til at give fylde og umiddelbarhed. Materialet peger på en vin med fast struktur, friskhed og mere præcision end man med rimelighed kan forlange i denne kategori.

Hindle beskriver let urtepræg, solbærblad, lakrids, mynte og kølige blåbærtoner. Paletten er gribende og salt fra start, lineær, ren og præcis, med knust pudret fløjl i tanninerne og en blød rød kirsebærtone under strukturen. Hun citerer Vincent Millet for, at 2025 i Saint-Estèphe krævede en intens 15 dages høst, men at de fandt stor Cabernet Sauvignon.

Martin fremhæver det nye hjertemotiv på etiketten og noterer en høst fra 4. til 20. september, med 32 hl/ha og 60% ny eg. Han finder brombær, briar, ceder og let teblad, med fin definition. Paletten er medium-bodied, med kornede tanniner, blidt greb, kalket præg, friskhed og ro i afslutningen. For ham er 2025 en af de bedste Capbern-udgivelser til dato.

Perrotti-Brown beskriver friske brombær, cassis, ribs, blyant og lavendel. Paletten er elegant bygget, med sort frugt, mineralske accenter, faste kornede tanniner og rigelig friskhed. Anson fremhæver tension, koncentration, cassis, blåbær, appelsinskal og en tydelig markering af grus-, ler- og kalkstensterroiret. Hun peger også på vinifikationsvalg med lav temperatur, lav ekstraktion og begrænset presvin som en del af vinens balance.

Capbern 2025 er en seriøs Saint-Estèphe uden tung retorik. Den har Calon-forbindelsen, men står på egne ben: Cabernet, grus, kalk, friskhed og en struktur, der gør den til et af de mere oplagte køb for dem, der følger venstrebredskvalitet under de store etiketter.

Straight and forward but so clean and precise, really in one line with such persistence and lovely crushed powdery velvet tannins. Excellent presentation – young and a little tight as expected but so pure and focused, with a wonderful soft red cherry aspect underneath. General manager Vincent Millet said: ‘It wasn't very easy in St-Estèphe this year with an intense 15-day harvest across all three wines in the portfolio as all varieties matured quickly, yet we found great Cabernet Sauvignon. For me this is a wine with great potential showing the tannins of the great vintages 2005, 2010 and 2015.’ 3.2pH.

    Deep ruby-hued, the 2025 Château Capbern is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc that will spend 18 months in 60% new oak. The bouquet offers cassis, black fruits, violets, and smoky tobacco and graphite nuances. On the palate, it's ripe and medium to full-bodied, with a round, layered mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and beautiful overall balance. Checking in at 13.8% alcohol with a pH of 3.6, this is a classy, juicy, elegant yet ripe and textured beauty.

A real drinkability is apparent, helped by wine making choices such as low temperature fermentation, low extraction, low amounts of press wine. Harvest September 4 to 20. New label from 2024 vintage, has the Calon heart and makes explicit the link that the two estates were owned by same family since the 19th century. Vincent Millet director. 60% new oak. 3.60 pH.
