Château Pichon-Longueville de Baron - eller i daglig tale blot Château Pichon Baron – er absolut ikke til at undgå at få øje på, når man kører over appellationsgrænsen fra Saint Julien og ind i Pauillac. Slottet kommer til syne på venstre side af vejen lige overfor tvillingeejendommen Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, som ligger på højre side, og tilsammen danner de næsten en port indtil Pauillac. De to slottet, eller nærmere de tilhørende vinmarker, var tidligere én og samme ejendom, men blev adskilt i midten af 1800-tallet i forbindelse med en arv.
Château Pichon Baron er et helt fantastisk og storslået slot, som tryllebinder den besøgende, og synet af det smukke slot taget næsten pusten fra en, når man står og beundre hele sceneriet. Et besøg på slottet og den tilhørende kælder er absolut et must.
Det er ikke kun det arkitektoniske, der imponerer, men også vinen selv. Den har fået et helt fantastisk løft i kvalitet og omdømme efter af den store franske forsikringskoncern AXA tog over i slutningen af 1980’erne. Jean-Michel Cazes fra Chateau Lynch Bages blev ansat, og der blev foretaget massive investeringer i både slot, kældre og ikke mindst i selve produktionsfaciliteterne. Også vinmarkerne havde behov for en renovering, og der blev igangsat et genplantningsprogram, som i dag virkelig slår igennem på vinens kvalitet.

Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate rim brightening. Ripe black cherries, fine cassis, a hint of precious wood, delicate nougat, tobacco nuances, inviting bouquet. Taut, tightly woven, ripe cherry fruit, extract-sweet texture, fine tannins, freshly structured, mineral-lemon nuances on the finish, shows energy and length, sure maturity potential.
La finesse du bouquet en dit long sur les ambitions de Pierre Montégut et ses équipes ! Elles sont évidemment axées sur la grandeur, les détails et la subtilité. Les nuances florales ouvrent le bal et laissent apparaître des nuances de cassis, de baies rouges et finalement une pointe de graphite et d’iris. En bouche, Pichon Baron entre doucement en scène. Il s’installe sereinement et attend ! Cela lui permet de répartir sa vigueur et son ampleur d’une manière ponctuelle et précise, de consolider son milieu de bouche et d’affuter sa finale. L’objectif est de mener ses tannins vers des sommets ; ils dispensent leur puissance et atteignent leur amplitude en fin de bouche, là où ils sont le plus pertinents et imposants tout en adoptant leur rôle d’assise fondamentale pour l’ensemble de l’édifice, en commun avec l’acidité. La puissance de Pichon Baron est d’une exceptionnelle finesse, avec une aptitude spectaculaire à doser son énergie et à plébisciter le caractère subtil et incisif de son acidité. Cette dernière dynamise littéralement la fin de bouche, à l’image d’un athlète qui parvient à accélérer dans la dernière ligne droite pour franchir la ligne d’arrivée sans faiblir. Quel souffle, quelle force tranquille, quel grand vin ! Il a encore moult histoires à conter, mais ce qu’il met aujourd’hui en perspective est brillant ! 2030-2070
The complex aromatic profile expresses flowers, black currants, licorice, black cherries, cocoa, espresso, cigar wrappers, and a touch of mint. The palate delivers a beautiful combination of vitality, sweetness, energy, and purity in the fruits. The long, vibrant finish is packed with layers of fruits. Yet, even with all the concentration, there is an elegance, and regal charm meshed with power. The endnotes continue expanding, and building long after the wine has left the glass. This modern classic will be great with just 3-5 years of bottle age. It also has the potential to age and evolve for 3 - 4 decades. The vintage was shaped in large part by daily tastings of the berries in each parcel, and even single rows of vines, seeking the best moment to pick. Another factor was which tanks to use for fermentations as well as what parcels went into specific tanks due to the vintages low yields. The wine blends 84% Cabernet Sauvignon with 16% Merlot. 13.3% ABV, 3.72 pH. The harvest took place September 8 - September 24. This marks the earliest start for a harvest in the history of the estate. Yields were quite low at 24 hectoliters per hectare. The wine is aging in 70% new, French oak barrels. Drink from 2032-2070.
